Order out of chaos

One of the strangest facts about the universe is that it keeps climbing uphill. Out of apparent chaos it produces structure, over and over: atoms condense into crystals, single cells assemble into multicellular animals, dust collapses into stars. Why? Is there a purpose, or is it simply that the laws of physics leave matter no choice — a random soup of atoms with no option but to crystallize, simple cells with no option but to band together?

You can point to the evidence here rather than wave at it. The order is paid for by energy — the enormous potential energy locked in matter. Particles coalesce under gravity, gravity ignites fusion, stars forge heavier elements, burn out, and seed the next generation of stars and planets. We've watched this at every stage of the lifecycle, and we can reproduce it in simulations from the known laws of physics. The same pattern shows up smaller and faster: Stanley Miller's experiment took a few basic compounds, added energy and time, and produced the building blocks of life; complex organic molecules have since turned up in comets and nebulae. Even a toy like Conway's Game of Life spits out replicators and intricate structure from almost nothing.

What I can't stop chewing on are the replicators. Why does the universe produce things that copy themselves at all — and why are they so selfish, bent on surviving no matter what? And then, just as puzzling, why do they so often cooperate? It starts to feel like intelligent life isn't a fluke the universe stumbled into but an emergent property baked into it from the start. Which is either a profound clue or exactly the kind of pattern a pattern-seeking animal would imagine. I genuinely can't tell which.
